From the heart of Rioja comes Macán. A wine of yesterday and today that respects the most authentic and distinctive style of this prestigious land.

A wine that seeks harmony through the expression of its roots. The character of its origin bestows upon it a special elegance, a lingering imprint, enveloping it in an unforgettable balance of sensitivity and expressiveness.

This red wine is made entirely from the Tempranillo grape variety. After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation takes place between barrel and tank. It is aged in fine- and extra-fine-grained French oak, mostly in new barrels and the remainder in barrels previously used for one other wine. It spends 15 months in oak and the rest of its aging in the bottle until it is released.

Macán and Macán Clásico represent the shared vision of Rioja held by two giants of the wine world: Rothschild and Vega Sicilia. These are wines of great elegance, where the harmony of their aromas and flavors showcases the authenticity of the land from which they originate and its capacity to produce exceptional wines.

Macán appears more hidden; time will have to shape its great elegance, enveloped by the silkiness of velvety tannins. This wine has greater aging potential than its younger sibling and is marked by a pronounced minerality.

Their coexistence stems from the desire to preserve the Bordeaux tradition of producing a first and a second wine. Both wines are kept together at all times and treated exactly the same, from the vineyard to the final tasting and classification. At that point, the different batches of wine from the harvest are separated, allowing each wine to be seen individually and highlighting the differences between them.

Since the Rothschild and Álvarez families founded Macán in 2009, time has been their ally in shaping a unique style. Thanks to these years of learning, discovering the soils and vineyards, we arrived at the 2020 vintage seeking what complements our wines: new plots and varieties such as Garnacha and Graciano.

The 2020 vintage was slightly warmer but benefited from optimal rainfall throughout the growing season. The freshness of this harvest is due to harvesting at the precise moment to respect the grapes and the introduction of the Graciano variety.

Macán 2020 is a vintage with which we feel completely identified: powerful and subtle, unctuous, a delight. A turning point in the definition of Macán.
