Fraser Gallop Estate Cabernet Merlot 2024
Established in 1999, Fraser Gallop Estate is at the heart of Margaret River’s Wilyabrup valley (20km) north of the town of Margaret River and six kilometres from the southwest coast of Western Australia. The Estate enjoys splendid isolation and a moderate maritime climate created by the Indian Ocean to the north and west.
The fruit was harvested and destemmed with minimal crushing to keep berries whole, then cooled for a short cold soak to retain freshness. Ferments were managed with a mix of gentle pump-overs and hand plunging to extract colour, flavour, and fine tannins, with daily tastings to monitor balance. Once ferment was underway, the wines were co-inoculated for malolactic fermentation and remained on skins for 10–15 days before being drained and basket pressed. The wine was then transferred to neutral French barriques for up to 12 months of maturation, with one racking to aid in maturation and development. The individual varieties were kept separate until final blending, before being bottled without fining and lightly filtered for clarity.
Aromas of ripe red plums, fresh cherries, cassis and mulberry are layered with dusty cocoa, dark chocolate, vanilla bean and a subtle bay-leaf edge.
The palate is vibrant and generous, carrying through the cassis, brambly berries and juicy plum fruit. Fine chalky tannins frame the wine, adding freshness and drive, while the supple texture reflects the harmony of the blend. Youthful and energetic now, it will soften and gain further complexity with time in bottle.
