Description

Forty-five years later, we’re more confident than ever in our wines, and more curious than ever about our vineyards. The more we discover about the connections between soil, season, and vine, the more we realize how much we still don’t know. And that’s exactly where we want to be—honoring our heritage while embracing the endless possibility of learning from our place.

Jeffrey named the vineyard ‘Gaia’ after scientist James Lovelock’s theory that earth is a single living organism of immense complexity, dependent on full species diversity to remain balanced and restore itself. This ecological philosophy, absorbed from Lovelock’s work, has profoundly influenced Jeffrey’s approach to all subsequent plantings.

Our thirty-fifth release of this blend from the Grosset Gaia Vineyard — now forty years old. 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, grown biodynamically, hand harvested, fermented with indigenous yeast and aged in French oak barriques with no fining.

Produced from 100% estate grown cabernet sauvignon (84%) and cabernet franc (16%)

Matured exclusively in French oak barriques (45% new) for 18 months.

Ageing potential: 25 years

Review
Very deep, bright purple colour that stains the glass; the aroma is fiercely intense, mulberry, cassis and blueberry to the fore, proudly fruit-driven and bold with primary fruit bursting from the glass. The intensity, concentration and precision are all evident in the mouth as well, with extreme depth and penetration, the energy of the wine obvious at every turn. It's jumping out of its skin, and will age superbly. This wine oozes class.

Review
Blackberry, blackcurrant, redcurrant, cigar box, floral/violet perfume, a little nougat richness. It’s medium-bodied, has crunch and energy, a cool cranberry feel to acidity, a graphite/pencil grip to tannin, tobacco, red and black fruits, with a crisp finish of superb length. This is a great expression of Cabernet. So very good. Brilliant, in all definitions of the word.

Tasting Profile
palate

Elegant and precise — blackcurrant, dark cherry and bramble lead a compact, concentrated palate. Fine-grain tannins glide seamlessly through layers of black fruits, embodying the vibrancy, intensity and balance of this geologically homogenous site
