Description

Pierre-Yves Colin left the family domaine in 2005 (Domaine Marc Colin in Saint-Aubin) to branch out on his own, and today, together with his wife Caroline Morey, has established Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey as one of Burgundy’s most exciting and sought-after producers. Based in Chassagne-Montrachet they craft mineral-driven Chardonnays and refined Pinot Noirs from some of the finest terroirs in the Côte d’Or.

The white wines are whole bunch pressed, fermented with native yeasts and aged on lees for up to 18 months in mostly larger 350 litre barrels without any lees stirring.

From 4 very old vineyards 0.75 ha total all located on the northern side of Chassagne close to the Puligny border - deeper soils here too.

Review
The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes, a blend of four parcels, has a fragrant nose of wild peach and light Granny Smiths, the malic element indicative of its Puligny leaning origin. The palate is well balanced with fine depth, a little more viscous and spicy in texture, fine extract here with a pleasing long finish. This will offer 15-20 years' drinking pleasure. Drink 2024-2040.

Moderate reduction masks everything but a touch of petrol character. The attractively textured and generous medium weight flavors possess good underlying tension while displaying fine length on the clean and sneaky long finish. I like the balance and would suggest allowing this 5 to 8 years of cellaring in order for better complexity to develop. Lovely and worth considering. Drink 2028+.
